Can a patient become psychotherapeutics addict that is prescribed by doctor?
This type of scenario is seen occurring less frequently but it can occur. The reason behind this is that the psychotherapeutics carries the risk of addiction with them. For instance, for treating ADHD stimulants are used, benzodiazepines are used for treating sleep or anxiety disorders and opioids treating the pain. In order to get treated successfully, it is very much important for the patient to follow the instructions of the physician carefully. Also, the physician should keep a close look at the progress of the patient and should treat keeping in mind the previous or the current drug abuse condition. Family history should also be kept in mind. Not only will it help in monitoring the treatment but determine the risk as well.
How co-occurring conditions such as mental disorder and addiction affects the addiction treatment?
Addiction to drug is such a disease related to brain which occurs frequently together with the mental disorder. In fact, now you will find about 6 from a total of 10 people suffering from disorder due to usage of illicit substances. They are also seen suffering from other mental illness and rates are similar for users of licit drugs—i.e. tobacco and alcohol. For such sufferers, treating the addiction is much more difficult since another condition is also present which needs treatment. Thus, it is important to assess such patients in order to treat the patients, keeping in mind the co-occurrence of the condition. Research shows that in order to effectively treat the patient it is important to treat both the conditions simultaneously.
