Addiction Treatments

One of the biggest problems is to admit that a drug and alcohol addiction problem exists; next is to agree to go for the required treatment. If the addicted person is willing to stop drug or alcohol abuse, and is ready to receive the support that is openly available, then this is the first step towards recovery.

The addicted person should start preparing to get on the road to recovery. A good beginning would be to:

  • Make An Announcement – The addict can begin by announcing to family members, friends and co-workers that he/she is trying to stop drinking or stop drug abuse. Ask them for their support on the road to recovery. He/she may be surprised by the response this will elicit.

  • Remove All Temptations – Get rid of things from home and workplace that remind the addict of alcohol and drugs. Remove all alcohol, bar ware, and other such things.

  • Set New Limits – The person needs to ensure that drinking is not allowed at home, and inform friends and relations that he/she will not be attending events where alcohol will be served. In case of drug abuse, set specific limits on drug use as abrupt stopping could cause more harm.

  • Avoid Adverse Influences – There is a need to distance self from people who are not supporting one’s efforts to stop alcohol as well as drug abuse. If there is a need to severe relations with such friends and relations, so be it!

  • Learn From Past Attempts – Possibly the person may have tried quitting drug and alcohol misuse in the past. There will be a need to recollect what worked and what did not. Find ways to avoid things that did not work earlier.

  • What are the unique and different needs of the addicted drug youths?

The needs of young drug abusers are quite unique and arises due to their immature stage of development of neurocoginitive and psychological. Research says that from birth till the time a child grows into an adult, brain is constantly undergoing development as well refinement. During these developments the thoughts and the actions becomes more reasoned as well as reflective. In reality, the actions are a result of the brain. Brain is responsible for our behaviors such as judgment, self-control, and the power to make decisions. All these behaviors are developed during the period of adolescence.

The drug abuse during youth is also often thought of being as a result of co-occurring problems related to mental health. This can be ADHD (attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder), problems in conducting, depression, anxiety or even defiant disorder. Furthermore, many researchers say that the development phase may also be related to the difficulties in academics, sexual abuse or an adolescent undergoing physical abuse. Adolescents are very much sensitive to their surroundings during their youth which is influenced especially by the families and peer groups. Thus, in order to treat drug abuser it is said that effective treatments are one which involves parents, integrated systems having adolescent participation in the academics activities as well as recognition of pro-social peer relationships importance. Other factors that should be taken into consideration when addressing the issue of youth addiction are the case management, treatments, assessments and family support services.

Medications are another way of treating an adolescent drug addict. At present, the only approved prescribed medicine is transdermal nicotine patch- which is approved by Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Research and efforts are still undergoing to find out the safety, efficiency as well as the effect of medications prescribed for adolescent who are alcohol, opioid and nicotine drug addict as well as adolescents with the disorders that are co-occurring.

Is there a treatment available for old adults drug addict?

As the youth grows older, the general population will expand with respect to the number of adults who are older. Due to this the number of older people using drug related substances is also increasing. Factors such as greater lifetime history of using the drug in comparison to the previous old generations, change in attitude towards drug use, cultural norms and psychotherapeutic medications widely being available are also the reasons due to which the number of adults drug addict has increased. As of today you won’t find effective treatments for treating the old adult drug addict but many researches says that the programs designed for treating young drugs addicts are as much effective as for treating old drug addicts. However, it is commonly seen that the drug addiction problem in old adults often goes unnoticed and thus the older adults are not treated.
