Type of drug addiction:
It may cause diabetes from 30-50% and 40-60%
50-70% hyper tension caused due to it.
The percentage of asthma is 50 to 70 %.
Comparison of relapse rates between drug addiction and other chronic illnesses:
Occurrence of relapse due to addiction resembles other chronic diseases like diabetes, hypertension, and asthma. The rate of relapse due to addiction and due to other chronic diseases is almost same. Addiction can be handled easily like all other chronic diseases. Treatment to addiction enables people to act oppositely to powerful effects (on brain) of addiction and help people in getting back normal lives again. This problem is often referred to as chronic in nature which means relapsing to drug abuse is not only possible but also relapse rate of this is similar to other chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and asthma.
Unfortunately, many supposition treatment fails when relapse occur. But this is not the case all the time; addiction can be successfully treated by continual evaluation or monitoring. Appropriate modification is also needed as in the case of other chronic diseases. This is necessary as there may be chances of recurring of symptoms even after treating e.g. when an individual is receiving effective treatment for hypertension and it effectively reduce the symptoms then the treatment thought to be successful but it might happen to occur that symptoms recur after stopping the treatment. Occurrence of lapses to drug abuse doesn’t indicate the failure, if treatment is not an effective one then choose alternate treatment.
An important question – is drug addiction treatment worth its cost?
Annually, drug abuse substances costs our nation about one half trillion dollars. Drug abuse treatment effectively reduces the costs associated with the health and social by far more than its own treatment. Also, the good thing about this treatment is that it is cost effective i.e. it is much less expensive than its alternatives. The methadone maintenance treatment charge average cost of about $4700 per patient (1 full year cost). Incarceration cost of 1 full year is approximately $24,000 per person. It has been shown through various researches that drug treatment reduces the drug use and associated costs effectively.
According to various preservative estimates, investment of every 1$ in addiction treatment program yields a return of about 4-7$ (from reduced related crimes, criminal justice costs, and theft). When saving associated with health care is included then it increases the saving with the ratio of 12 to 1. Interpersonal combat and other problems like greater workplace productivity, and some drug related accidents can be reduced by these major savings (savings to individual and to society).
